Celebrating Good Neighbors
Neighbors have a critical role to play in the COVID-19 pandemic. Who on your block might need help if they get sick? Who might have trouble getting groceries? Who might be isolated with no one to talk to? How can neighbors lift each other’s spirits?
Lots of great stories are emerging from neighborhoods all across the world: Italians singing together from their balconies, young children performing string duets on the porch of a homebound neighbor, teens writing encouraging chalk messages on sidewalks, neighbors delivering groceries to homebound older adults. What will we in Waupaca remember about this time? What lemonade can we make from this sour historical moment, and what good stories will we have to tell our children and grandchildren?
You can nominate your neighbor for the simple, neighborly things they do: bringing groceries to those at risk, sharing vegetables from the garden, kids with a lemonade stand. ThedaCare and a local community group were originally planning a banquet event in June called the Great Neighbor Shoutout to celebrate together. We will have to postpone this event but you can still nominate someone using the on-line form here https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/WaupacaGNSO.
We are presented now with an amazing opportunity, not only to recognize our neighbors, but also to find new ways to support each other that we can celebrate at that future time when we are safe to gather again. Please consider what your story will be, and recognize your neighbors for both the simple things they have been doing all along, and the extraordinary things they are doing for one another in this challenging time. It has perhaps never been so true that we – in our local communities, and across the world – are in this together.
